Qualifications:           Valid Mississippi License (Masters Level is preferred)

                                   Certification or Endorsement in Dyslexia Therapy Training Program                                                                             (as defined by MDE)

 

Reports To:                Elementary Principals

 

Job Goal:      

     1. To lead district efforts in servicing students who qualify for Dyslexia Intervention services.

     2. To assist schools in making programming decision that meet the students’ needs. 

     3. To train staff on effective instructional strategies for students who show characteristic of dyslexia

           

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Provide Dyslexia therapy that is scientific, researched based, Orton-Gillingham based, and in a small group or individualized setting to teach student the components of reading instruction which include:
    • Phonemic awareness to enable students to detect, segment, blend and manipulate sounds in spoken language;
    • Graphophonemic knowledge (phonics) for teaching the letter-sound plan of English;
    • The entire structure of the English language that encompasses morphology, semantics, syntax and pragmatics;
    • Linguistic instruction directed toward proficiency and fluency with the patterns of language so that words and sentences are carriers of meaning; and
    • Strategies that students use for decoding, encoding, word recognition, fluency and comprehension
  2. Meet the specific learning needs of each student in a small group setting, intensive, highly concentrated instruction that maximizes student engagement and uses specialized methods and materials
  3. Use meaning based instruction directed toward purposeful reading and writing with an emphasis on comprehension and composition
  4. Use multisensory instruction that incorporates the simultaneous use of two (2) or more sensory pathways during presentations and practice.
  5. Assist in the identification of the students for the program that are identified on the first grade Dyslexia Screener, as well, as students with a data based diagnosis of Dyslexia.
  6. Work with staff at both elementary schools in the area of professional development (when scheduled) to provide strategies for the general education classroom.

Terms of Employment:        187 days a year.  Salary to be established by the Board.

 

Evaluation:                           Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the                                                           Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
